🎸 What’s the Best Age to Start Guitar Lessons In Fort Saskatchewan?

A Parent’s Guide for Fort Saskatchewan Families
One of the most common questions we get at Fort Saskatchewan Music Academy is:
“When should my child start guitar lessons?”
It’s a great question — and the answer depends on more than just age. While many kids are excited to strum their first chord, starting too early can lead to frustration if the physical or cognitive skills aren’t quite there yet.
In this post, we’ll help you understand when your child is truly ready, what type of guitar is best to begin with, and how to ensure they love their first lessons.
1. The Ideal Starting Age: 6 to 9 Years Old
Most children are ready to start guitar between the ages of 6 and 9. That’s when they typically have:
The hand strength to press down strings
Longer attention spans to follow instructions
The fine motor skills to manage finger placement
A strong interest in music and creativity
Some eager learners can start as early as 5, in which we'd start with ukulele, we recommend a readiness evaluation or trial lesson to be sure the experience will be fun — not frustrating.
2. Why Starting Too Early Can Backfire
Guitar requires a level of physical coordination that’s unique. Younger children often struggle with:
Finger strength to hold down strings cleanly
The size and shape of the guitar
Proper hand positioning without strain
If a child starts before they’re physically ready, they may become discouraged quickly. That’s why we sometimes recommend piano or ukulele as a musical starting point for kids under 6.
3. Signs Your Child is Ready for Guitar
Every child is different. Here are a few signs they may be ready to start:
They can follow multi-step instructions
They’ve expressed strong interest in guitar or music
They can sit and focus for 20–30 minutes
Their hands are large enough to grip a junior-sized guitar comfortably
When in doubt, our team can provide a no-pressure readiness check with one of our friendly instructors.
4. Choosing the Right Starter Guitar
The right guitar makes all the difference. We recommend:
A ½ or ¾ size nylon-string acoustic for beginners ages 6–9
Avoid full-size guitars for small children
Lighter string tension makes playing more comfortable
For kids 10+, a junior-size electric guitar may also be an option
We’re happy to help you choose or even test guitars in your first lesson.
